Upgrading Your Eee RAM

April 9, 2008

Upgrading your Eee’s RAM does NOT void your warranty!

This is a quick step guide on upgrading your Eee’s RAM. Note that I do use EeeDora, and no kernel recompiling was needed.

  1. Turn your Eee over, unplug it, and remove the battery.
  2. Remove the two screws holding the access cover on.
  3. The RAM is the one closest to the bottom of the picture. Push the two clamps holding the RAM stick in place, and lift the RAM from the top up, then pull it out.
  4. Take your new RAM chip (careful not to touch the gold feet) by the edges, and place it in the now empty slot. Note: The “missing tooth” will be on the left. ;-)
  5. Set the new RAM in place, and reattach the holding rods to either side.
  6. Replace the cover, battery, and power. Boot up, and press F2.
  7. Note that the amount of System Memory now shows 2 gigs. Boot up, open up a terminal window, and type top. The amount of memory is shown by the Mem:. In this case Mem: 2066732k. (Press Q to exit top)

That’s it! Enjoy the new memory upgrade!

I see the 2 meg in the bios when I hit F2. I changed the xandros to see the full desktop but when I check in the console window I see 906,716 as total memory. Is there something that I should do?

I think you might be comparing apples to oranges here… what are you typing to see your available/installed RAM from the console?

    try typing (su first)

    cat /proc/meminfo

You should get a good idea of what’s going on.
